International Relations students in U.S. Embassy’s “Students against Corruption”

5 April 2017 – Twelve IULI International Relations students visited @america, the United States cultural center in Jakarta. They participated in a public discussion themed “Students against Corruption”—an event targeted at Indonesian youth, especially university students. The host, the U.S. Mission to Indonesia, invited IULI’s INR to partake in this particular event.

The discussion was aimed at fostering student activism in fighting corruption, especially in locales nearest to students’ daily activities. Representatives from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), several non-governmental organizations, and the media were present to deliver relevant materials. The event was also attended by none other than the U.S. Deputy Chef de mission diplomatique to Indonesia, Brian McFeeters.

IULI students were interested throughout the talks and eager to participate in the sessions that followed, during which once again they showed their distinct qualities. Several questions were raised by IULI students; Jessica Natalie (INR 15), for example, asked about the expansion of KPK offices into the regions as well as suggesting the establishment of a “TransparencyCamp”-modeled institution for combating  corruption in its the early stages. The suggestion received a very warm welcome and even compliments from the speakers. Once again, IULI students demonstrated their grasp of the big picture beyond their daily lectures at the university. This broadening of horizons, linked to networking, is an essential part of IULI’s educational aim. (SaK/OlN/MiE)
